Gambling should be entertainment, not income. The controls below are free, they apply at every UK-licensed operator, and none of them require a conversation with customer support.
Set the limit before you play, not after
Every UKGC-licensed operator must let you set a deposit limit, and the limit takes effect immediately when you lower it. Increases are the asymmetric part: an operator cannot raise a limit on request alone, it has to wait out a cooling-off period and then get your confirmation, which is what makes the tool useful rather than decorative.
Limits are set per brand rather than per group, so a limit agreed at one site leaves its sister brands untouched. Several brands in this market share a parent, which means three accounts under one owner need three separate limits.
Time-outs sit between a limit and full exclusion: a block of 24 hours up to six weeks, which cannot be reversed early. Where a session is the problem rather than the spend, that is the tool that matches it.
GAMSTOP covers the whole market at once
GAMSTOP is the national self-exclusion scheme and every operator licensed in Great Britain must be signed up to it. Registering once blocks you across all of them for six months, one year or five years, which is a far wider block than excluding yourself brand by brand.
It cannot be undone before the period ends. That is the point of it, and it is worth knowing before registering rather than after: the minimum commitment is six months and no support team can shorten it.
Sites advertising themselves as outside GAMSTOP are outside UK licensing as well. This site does not list them, and the protections described on this page do not exist there.
The rules that limit the game itself
Some protection is built into UK slots rather than left to the player. The maximum stake is £5 per game cycle for players aged 25 and over, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24 — the lower cap arrived on 21 May 2025, the £5 cap on 9 April 2025. Both are per game cycle rather than per spin.
A spin cannot resolve in under 2.5 seconds. Autoplay, turbo, quick spin and slam stop are prohibited outright, as are sounds or animations that celebrate a return smaller than the stake. Playing several slots simultaneously is also barred.
On the money side, gambling on a credit card has been banned since April 2020, and operators cannot let you reverse a withdrawal back into play once you have requested it. If a site offers you any of these things, it is not UK-licensed.
